With a combination of the cheap glass & grainy Kodak Ektachrome 200 slide film, most of the images are, unfortunately, poor quality. The images in this collection are what I consider to be the best out of a bad bunch, in terms of quality, although, I have included one or two which were border line. Image quality aside, they still serve as a record & reminder of the traction in the region in that final year of the 55s. 55006,withdrawn soon after 55005 on the 23 Feb 81, stands alone, dumped at the North end of the works. May 1981. A shot taken from the opposite end of the line up with 55017 at the head. Jan 1982 A Napier Deltic power unit, probably taken from 55020 or 55001.55007 can be seen in the distance as per next image. Jan 1982. 55012, inside York MPD on 25th May 81. Although she was taken out of service only days earlier, she was'nt officially withdrawn until the 30th May 1981. A small section of battery compartment grill is all that remains, this must have once been attached to either St Paddy or Nimbus judging by the small mark left by the nameplate. Jan 1982. The next four images were taken on a unofficial visit to York MPD on the 25th May 1981. Here, 55014 & 55021 await attention inside the depot. 55004, taken inside the depot from an inspection pit. 25-5-81. A shot taken from the entrance of the depot with 55004 flanked by classes 47 & 45. 25-5-81. 55014, on Gateshead MPD on the 8-7-81. A spanking 55002, enters Durham station with the 05.50 Kings Cross - Aberdeen. 4-7-81. Life did'nt get much better than this in 81, sea, sun & a Deltic, charging through Alnmouth. 55004, on the 1S27. 07.36 Plymouth to Edinburgh. 18-7-81. A grainy shot of 55015 heading the 1S15, 17.35 Newcastle - Edinburgh past Little Benton, Newcastle. 20-4-81 A bit of a slap, dash paint job on 55021s nameplate during 1981. January 1982, marked the start of life without Deltics.I had to say a final farewell, so a good friend & I travelled to Doncaster in the hope we might just catch a last glimpse of these magnificent loco's.We headed off to the rear of the works & soon found a gap in the perimeter fence.Needless to say we did'nt need any invitation to enter, it was straight through & if we had been caught it would have been all worth it. 55007 then 55021 at the South end of the line up. 55010 is the third in the line, taken from the same end as the previous shot. There was a total 12 Deltics in the line up. Jan 1982 During 1981 there was one or two early withdrawals, here 55005, being one of those casualties. Withdrawn on 21 Feb 81, she stands forlornly with a class 03 shunter for company on the East side of the works. May 1981. 55015, made it into 1982 & had the honour of working the DELTIC SCOTSMAN farewell railtour. In this shot, she is seen dumped outside the paint shop at Doncaster works minus her comemorative headcode blank in Jan 1982. 55015, takes a rest between duties, on Gateshead MPD re-fueling point after bringing in the 1E08 07.30 Edinburgh - Newcastle. Her next turn would be the 1S15 17.35 Newcastle - Edinburgh. 29-5-81.

55019 is seen passing the site of Heaton station with that regular Deltic turn,1V93 09.50 Edinburgh to Plymouth,The 55 would take the train as far as York. I had to severley crop this image due to pannicking & pressing the shutter to early,however it was the only Northbound shot I managed in the sun at this particular location. By October of 81,55010 had lost one of her namplates for some reason,she's seen here passing Brandon,Co Durham with a relief to KX from Newcastle in September 1981. Ballymooss,Heading North through the Newcastle suburbs with the 05.50 Kings Cross to Aberdeen.Sept 81. The following five Deltic images were a result of an all night shoot on York station in September of 81.I still remember it very well,it was a still night & you could hear the roar of those twin Napiers long after they had departed.So here's the first of them with 55019 at the head of the 1E39 to the Cross.25-9-81.
